Casting or forging or sheet metal fabrication, which is more economical?

June 14, 2010 - 11:03 am 5 Comments

Which process is more economical, casting or forging or sheet metal fabrication, without considering initial and tooling costs?

It depends on the application, the shape of the item being made and the number being make.

Also to not include initial and tooling costs is unfair since an item that can be fabricated by welding has fewer tooling costs and is good for one time items.

Metal Casting at Home Part 13. Small Casting with Core.

May 28, 2010 - 3:15 pm 17 Comments

Making a small casting in aluminium. A core is used to make the intenal detail of the casting. This is the gearbox for my Stickney engine model. There are some slight differences in technique from my other videos, I am learning all the time!

May 24, 2010 - 4:37 am 1 Comment

metal casting at home. everything is very low tech. used camera that did not have sound. reached temperatures of at least 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. made from digging hole, putting coals in and pumping oxygen into the hole (vacuum)

casting metal??10pts.?

May 20, 2010 - 2:29 pm 2 Comments

i casted a metal keychain, and sandpapered it but now there is loads of lines due to the sandpaper, how can i get rid of them?

thanx.

only way to get rid of sandpaper scratches is polishing them out – which is a slow and elbow grease demanding process. You will need sandpaper with progressively finer grit, e.g. if you started out with 100 you’d use 200, 400, 1000. After 1000 you’ll need polishing compound for metal, one or two different ones, depending on how much mirror polish you want.

The alternative is to go with a satin look and use a wirebrush and make so many scratches that the individual ones aren’t noticeable and it looks intentional.

Metal Casting Simulation: Feeder Design Analysis

May 19, 2010 - 2:34 pm No Comments

A simulation comparing the assigned feeder parameters per Table 2. design 16 of the paper entitled “Tapered Riser Design Optimization” by Creese/ Xia

Plate casting moduls = 2 in. (plate thickness/2)
Plate casting volume = 1024 in3
Cylindrical feeder volume = 679 in3
Tapered feeder volume = 525 in3

The simulations were performed using an 18Cr-8Ni stainless steel in resin bonded sand molds.

I have run several simulations using the design parameters per table 2 (all with stainless steel) and have found that in all situations the tapered top feeder performed inadequately.
