How do I remove rust from a cast iron pan?
April 16, 2010 - 3:22 pm
My husband left my mothers hand me down cast iron pan in the sink one night and now it has rust in it. Does anyone know how to get rid of the rust spots? I tried salt and oil with a brillo pad, and it seemed to lessen the spots but not completely abolish them. Thanks!
coat it in cooking oil, let it sit for a week, then wipe it clean
if its still there, try it again

Use citric acid to wash it often and it leaves soon.

Simmer slowly 1cm or more of vinegar in the pan on the stove until nearly gone, then wash in soapy water and rinse. Then heat a light coat of oil in the pan, rinse in soapy water then rinse, dry, and allow to dry on the turned off heated element. Never fails.

soap pad & water. DRY ON HOT BURNER; never towel dry or air dry, always. Then, apply oil coat to inside walls & bottom of pan, bacon grease works very well.
If pan had not been ’seasoned’, bake greased pan in oven until grease starts smoking. Air cool & store.
After each washing after that, always stove top heat dry (that is the secret). I have not had need to reapply grease for many years since the pan had been ’seasoned’.

The absolute best way is to re-season it, and the best way to season is to hold it over an open flame, if possible, like over a fireplace or bonfire.
