I have a Dremel (small drill) that I am using to carve/drill wax for lost wax casting. I bought the machine, not knowing how *holy crap* fast it is, and it actually melts the wax when I am using it on it’s slowest setting. Is there any way I can slow it down beyond its slowest speed?

Any ideas of how to do this will be greatly appreciated!

That is a tricky situation. If it is a cordless dremel you could allow the battery to drain most of the way before using it but then you are limited with time to use it before it dies. If it is a corded dremel, which I assume it is.. Then one thing I could think of is to add a little slipper brake to it. The little metal post you push in when changing your attachments that locks into the chuck and doesn’t allow it to spin so you can use a wrench to loosen it. Maybe try popping the plastic shroud off and putting some electrical tape at the end of the post that goes into the chuck. By doing this, it wouldn’t lock into the chuck.. all you would have to do is push down gently on the metal post while using your dremel and it would create friction to slow the speed down a bit. Other than that, lowering the voltage would result in it not working properly. You would have to change the current path on the circuit board to successfully pull that off. You could also always go to a Hobby Lobby and buy one of those cheap $10- $15 dollar battery powered wood engravers. They don’t pack much power. Good luck, hope some of this helps.

Jill Kennedy is the famous UK author of several books on her favorite art — silk painting. In this DVD she demonstrates 10 of her most called upon techniques for creating fantastic designs in silk. In this excerpt she demonstrates how wax often is preferential to gutta or other resists for it’s ability to contain or hold colors and be used in larger areas while providing similar effects to gutta’s ability to contain dye within regions. Here she emphasizes the ability to work with dyes immediately after application and demonstrates how fun it is to use traditional Indonesian tjantings and Japanese brushes to create “Pisces” or the “twin fish” design in the scarf she is working on.
