What Standards exist for SandBlasting and Shotblasting?

March 18, 2010 - 3:32 am 2 Comments

Is it okey to use a kind of basting for a Cast Aluminium part as a finished surface instead of painting?

Sand blasting is quite different from shoot blasting. The sand blasting is with abrasive and leaves the surface active with open crevices to give the paint finish a good support. Shoot blasting could go as finish if the part is used in a non corrosive environment because employs a quasi non abrasive steel grit and can leave a more hard and soft finished surface. A little silicone oil or gel could seal and guarantee agreeable matte finish. Painting obviously guarantees a better protection against corrosion. Phosphating, chromiting and anodizing could also be used depending from applications. Cylinder head in automotive for example is finished only with vibrators and some ceramic abrasive. Standard finish are indicated with a SA # to indicate the rugosity.

What materials are commonly used for producing outdoor garden lights?

March 16, 2010 - 4:16 am 3 Comments

For casing, or for the casting of the actual product.
So far I seem to see ABS and stainless steel popping up a lot.
I’m wondering, is aluminium commonly used as well as stainless steel? and with plastics, is polycarbonate common, or is there another main thermoplastic?
thanks

The two main things that are going to deteriorate the material is water and sun light. Avoiding easily corroded materials such as steel is a good idea. Plastics can be subject to deterioration from UV.

Other than that its cost. Stainless Steel would seem an expensive material to buy and manufacture from so I wouldn’t expect that to be used much. It doesn’t paint too easy either. Aluminium is good as it casts fairly easy.

Is an aluminium built engine is less durable than an all cast iron one.?

March 14, 2010 - 4:29 am 5 Comments

Im asking this cuz i know that some engine with aliminium in it either the intake , block , heads have a tendancy to wrap , leak, and be less durable overall than the good old chevy small block for exemple. So iz it just coincidence or iz cast iron really better than aluminium even if they say they use it to lower the weight of the car. For exmple i think a gm 3.8 3800 is all cast iron (intake block) and i know it has a better reputation than a 3.1 thx

the only reason for the heads warping. Is that the 3.1 had a iron block and aluminum heads that have different expansion rates and at the time was still a somewhat new technology. Any engine with aluminum/iron can have that problem. But engineering is alot better now then then. The 3.8 actually has a plastic intake that had a tendency to leak but they came up with a better replacement version that keeps that from happening. I guess there was some sort of lawsuit against gm and the coolent they use dexcool that some people said made the intake deteriorate.

Backyard Aluminum casting

Backyard aluminum casting at home. Melting aluminum in a charcoal foundry and pouring it into a greensand mold. The little flare up at the end was easily contained and nothing was damaged except the wooden box.

i do not understand the price i payed for the scrap aluminium
on the londen metal exchange LME
the price is 2700 usdollar per 1000 kilo
2.7 dollar per kilo
2.7 U.S. dollars = 1.82679296 Euros
1.82 euro * 22 kilo = 40.18euro and i paid 25 euro
could get sleeping rich if i where a scrap metal dealer

An average aluminium can (without its contents)
weighed 16.55 grams in 1992.
By 2005 the aluminium can weighed about 14.7 grams.
thats 68 / 69 cans in a kilo
aluminium can price is 1.5 usd a kilo or 1500usd per ton

so this skull is aprox 345 cans

Aluminium has a melting point of 660°C
compared with 1540°C for iron

If all the aluminium cans sold in the UK were recycled for cash it would raise more than £30 million for collectors.
Setting up an aluminium can recycling scheme is a great way to raise funds for a charity or good cause without having to ask for donations.
