i build basses. all handmade right down to the pickups (pups by a friend) the only thing i rely on are the tuners which i buy from hipshot. i know of lost foam casting and sand, i actually worked in a foundry once for a week if anyone out there in yahoo land can start me off in the right direction or just tell me to keep buying them or whatever, i’d be very grateful. there are plenty of vids on you tube, but not really in the same level of detail that i’m after.

Presume you’re thinking of making something akin to tuning forks?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuning_fork#Calculation_of_frequency

Think you’d need another tuning fork to calibrate to and would needsome machining to tune the tunning folk to the correct pitch

Casting is unlikely to produce the correct pitches right on it’s own. Apparently Russian bells are as cast, and there is the following.

Pitch pipes might be a lot easier to make using the physics from

I think you have a good idea there. Using an engine and parts that is available in the USA and runs on Premium pump gasoline. All the cast iron and steel exhaust makes the VQ-35 heavy. I have not weighed a VQ. However the oil pan may get into the way of your motor cross member and you will need a late model rear drive Transmission.

or melt preparation processes

You need to be more specific. There are many different types of cast iron, many different aluminum alloys, and some different Co-Cr alloys that are all treated differently depending on what they are and how they are being cast. There are also many different melt preparation processes including different preparations even for the same final alloy depending on if you are starting with virgin charge or 100% scrap or a mix. The preparations for a given alloy using a given type of charge may even be different just depending on how the charge is being melted.

i want to get hold of some aluminium for metal casting the problem is i don’t know where to get it from.I have tried the local dump that have a metal recycling center and they refused and the local scrap yard which seems to be quite large,(the guy at the counter said all the Al goes into the Al waste and he wont put any aside however he did try to sell me a wheel.).there is nothing lying around my area and if there was metal "collectors" would come and take it (which there seems to be a lot of in my area). i have rang a metal fabricator and they offered £3 per kg (which doesn’t seem to be to bad but still 3x the price of scrap)
does anyone know where i can get hold of some aluminium in harrow. or any metal recycling center which is willing to sell small quantity’s of scrap Al to the public for cheap.

I am in the states but the way I would do it here is to track down the local junk men who pick this stuff up and buy the aluminum from him. Another possibility is to locate a manufacturing plant who makes aluminum parts and ask them if you can have some of their scrap or just buy some from them.Yet, another idea is to go around to the local farmers as some of them may have it lying aorund in their own scrap piles. Good Luck!

But, if we are going to break the bank anyway, then we’d want one made entirely (stand and all) of stainless steal or cast aluminium.
Any ideas?

typically all U.S. natural gas bbq grills have an electronic pizzo igniter that sparks the gas to ignite the burners . i have yet to see one with a ceramic hot surface igniter or infrared burner besides your normal flame burners. and yes, these do come all stainless steel depending your model and make. best of luck

No, you can still use it. The only "problem" is an aesthetic one. The dish was soap may have dulled it.

Does the magnet test definitely rule out the cast iron possibility?
I bought it on ebay for a decent price, even if it is aluminium. There is quite a clean crack in one place. Would this also suggest aluminium?
Thanks

Swipe a file over it somewhere and you’ll see immediately whether it’s cast iron or aluminium . Cast will be a dark color and aluminium will be light silvery color. I have seen both cast and alloy furniture and there is quite a noticeable difference in weight.

you should either get someone to make you metal molds(cast iron or steel) by welding or find something suitable made from cast iron or steel for your purposes(if your casting ingots, ect)

depends on the pan

some, like cast iron, are generally made by putting molten iron into molds made from pressed sand, and let harden

many others are made by sheets of metal that are put between a few stamping mechanisms which press the sheet into the appropriate shape
