First Aluminum Casting

I just poured my first aluminum casting today! This is a quick video after the fact of the furnace, the casting, and some of the stuff I used.

    I heated it in the over at 450 degrees for two hours as per the instructions I had read online… I really think, in retrospect that the main problem was the mold was too thin at the deepest point, and thus cracked, and allowed air into the aluminum.

    nice video…was wondering if you tried preheating the plaster before the pour? or maybe it just gets air bubbles, i’ve seen people make molds with plaster but the pull out the air in a vacuum chamber first

    The plaster of paris did not work very well, and cracked exactly like you said. I switched to sand for my second casting, and it worked MUCH better! -Ben

    If the lining cracks too much in the furnace place wire mesh screen in the fireclay it will help. I’ve made a furnace a while ago and used mesh in fireclay. good crucible nice and thick walled. plaster of paris I thought would crack to be used as a mold would be my guess but if it doesn’t more power to you.
