Lost Wax(Investment Cast)?

July 4, 2010 - 11:57 pm 1 Comment

What everyday product I can find in my home that is Investment Cast and how can you tell?

Do you have anything made of bronze?

Or a clarinet? The keys on a clarinet are made using the lost-wax casting process, where a mold of the object is made of wax, encased in plaster, then heated so the wax melts out. Then molten metal flows in and fills the cavity left by the wax.

You could try looking on Wikipedia for a list of items made with the lost-wax process. Those are the only two I can think of.

This is the Third step in the reproduction process I use for making my jewelry. I say “a little time has elapsed” but the truth is it was more like several hours to build the sprue tree.

Vermont Castings Woodstove

July 2, 2010 - 8:18 pm 17 Comments

This video was uploaded so I could show the VT Casting dealer the problem with the woodstove. It appears that a hot gas flare is creating enough pressure inside the stove to force smoke out the griddle gasket even with the weight of a large pot of water on top. There is no wind outside, the catalytic converter is engaged, the stove temp is about 400+ and the air intake is set to low (slightly forward of vertical). The smoke puff’s do not happen when the catalytic convert is disengaged. The gasket is a year old. The griddle is new. It only smokes when the hot gas flame-up occurs – which is not often.
